Action - a genre of computer games in which the success of the player in the big degree depends on its speed of reaction and ability quickly to make tactical decisions. Action of such games develops very dynamically and demands a pressure of attention and fast reaction to events occurring in game. Thus as the basic means of progress in game any weapon, as a rule, is used.
However the above-named games are now unfairly forgotten, and Doom is taken as reference point. Doom has been published in 1993. In 1994 second part of Doom is released. Many gamers still consider it the best action shooter ever. After unprecedented success of id Software, huge amounts of computer action games were driven to shop shells. Some of them was able to release rather successful games. For example, firm Raven has created Heretic and its continuation Hexen. LucasArt has issued a quite gift to fans of "Star Wars” movie – the game Dark Forces. And a project Duke Nukem 3D also has particularly pushed Doom from a pedestal of shooting kings.
Naturally, all these computer games have noticeably stepped forward with artwork quality, but their essence has remained same - tridimentionality and a minimum of visual effects. Last project of this class became a masterpiece from id Software - Quake, presented to gamers in 1996. Instead of plane figures, truly three-dimensional generated images were shown to a gamer. But the calculation of all this grandeur demanded all PC resources and, above all, the CPU unit. Just created and released simultaneously with the Quake 2 in 1997, three-dimensional graphics accelerators changed the situation.
In 1999 came the legendary Half-Life and Unreal, where the play area finally acquired big landscapes. Virtual world in these 3D-shooters was unbelievably big in comparison to all previous 3D games. Many computer games included word “Dungeon” in its name, since game engines were able to process very limited number of visuals.
Ascension of three-dimensional computer games into a new era is considered to be year 2004. That is, with the release of FarCry shooter, games have crossed a kind of milestone in their evolution. Recently developers often add stealth-elements in the games to diversify game process. Here it is necessary to note games No One Lives Forever, Syphon Filter, Commandos, Perfect Dark, Far Cry, Deus Ex and Counter-Strike: Condition Zero in which this combination of genres has turned out the most successful.
