Checkers - one of the most ancient games. It is known that they carried away all the Egyptian pharaohs. The ancient Egyptians believed that the checkers invented the god of wisdom Thoth, and the ancient Greeks attributed the creation of this game the messenger of the gods Hermes, patron of thieves and merchants.
The history of checkers, as well as many other games, goes into far antiquity. The game, like checkers - Alquerque was circulated in Egypt and the first mention of it belong to 1600 BC To the naked eye can see similarities of chess and checkers - it's about the spoken and checkered board, and the division into "white" and "black" figures, and in turn moves, and many other elements of both games. And these coincidences are completely random - the game of checkers in a modern form developed out of the French, who in about 12th century Egyptian Alquerque crossed with a game of chess.
Method of movement of drafts in the field (measured diagonally) is taken from the rules of the road queen (queen) in chess. It is this fact at one time was the reason that the checkers in some parts of England is still called "draughts" - a word signifying the progress of Queen in chess.
The modern name of the game "Checkers" (checkers) came from a word for a chess board - "checkered" - which translates as "checkered." Pilgrims, sailed to North America from those areas of England where the game of checkers has been called a modern twist, have resulted in spreading the word "checkers" in all English-speaking countries.
Harold James Ruthven Murray, who has studied the history of chess and checkers, came to the conclusion that the bombs spread around the world very slowly - much slower than other table games. About this game, he found a few mentions in the period 12-16 centuries. Everything indicates that the game in this period has been extended only in England, France and possibly Spain (there is mention of the work the first manual on Checkers Torquemada, was released in Spain in 1547, but no surviving ).
