History of air combat, part 23.
In 1968, the Olympic Games were first held in Latin America -Mexico City. The city got an honorable duty to hold XIX Olympic Games, in spite of the fact that city is located 2300m above sea level. Many people from organizers, athletes, and doctors were afraid that rarefied air will cause loss of results for all endurance/heart concerned disciplines. The Games even got second name – "Cardiac Olympics". Indeed, those who ran 10,000 meters were affected by rarefied air. However many world records were beaten at Mexico, including up to 400 meter run, throwing and jumping. During these games, for a first time in Olympic Games history, a woman (Enriqueta Basilio) ignited the Olympic Torch. This was largely favored by increasing flow of tourists from different countries, and had a favorable effect on the economy of Mexico, as well as on the expansion of international contacts which promoted a national culture.
