During the summer solstice, competitors and organizers, pilgrims and supporters, were gathering together to honor gods by setting up a fire on altars of Olympia. The winner of running competitions has been awarded an honor to ignite a fire for the sacrifice. In the glow of the fire competition participants, artists, and others were assembling under a peace agreement, from different cities and nations. That is why this tradition to ignite a fire and deliver it to a competition spot has been renewed.
One of the traditions of the modern Olympic Games - is the vivid fire lighting ceremony in Olympia, and its delivery to the main games area. This exciting journey of carrying the fire through the country, and occasionally - continents, can be watched by millions of people with television.
The very first place the Olympic flame was ignited – is Amsterdam Stadium. This event took place on the first day of the Games in 1928. It is the indisputable fact, however, most researchers in the field of Olympic history cannot find evidence that this tradition wasn’t established as an order, and Olympic Fire wasn’t transmitted from Olympia.
